... On those nights that Ami and Gina were rehearsing for their big show Gina told Ami about things that had gone on around The House that were never mentioned.

... One of the girls who had left before Ami came was called Jolie.

... Jolie had been an atractive, smart, young woman who adjusted to life around The House quickly. She'd been a favorite of Jason's for some months. And delight of delights, she didn't seem to have any anoying hang ups.

... "So what happened?"

... "Patience, patience."

... It was expected that Jolie and April would get along like you and Persephone. They both had an interest in bodybuilding. At that time, April slept in the center of the big bed. The new girl always slept next to Agnes which placed her between Agnes and April.

... You know that April has had implants? Well Jolie didn't have implants and she was quite proud of her breasts. Now they weren't anything compared to April's and neither was her muscles mass but she was toned where April is big. Not that April isn't toned but if you were looking for compliments you would say April has mass and Jolie had tone.

... The two of them became quite insufferable really. They talked bodybuilding twentyfour-seven if we let them. They almost ran to the machines as soon as lunch was over and had to be pulled off them, literrally. I mean it. Frank and David had to pull them off the machines one evening so they would go into dinner.

... I never learned what Jolie's weakness was but April was on the phone the next day and her mother had a recently polaroid of April in full competition pose and a bikini. Her mother was horrified. As I understand it, April's mother has tried to imagine that April is dead. She has even gone so far as to investigate having a second child.

... April's mother is too old and vain to bare another child herself but I understand she's considering having her eggs harvested. She's been trying to locate her father, April's grandfather. She wants to use his sperm to artificially fertilize the eggs and then have them implanted in a surrogate. She apparently blames April's father's genes for April's unsuitable behavior. That's what she calls it, unsuitable.

... Some how being unsuitable is the worst thing she can think of to say.

... As I said, I never learned how Jolie was punished but I'm sure she was.

... But the trouble was just begining. You see, the two of them had been competing at the time. A kind of endurance test. And the competition between them had become so intense that they didn't really care about the consequences.

... I happen to know, I don't believe even Persephone knows about this, I happen to know that they were caught competing not more then a week later. They were both in the gym in the middle of the night. Again, going at it on seperate exercise machines. Well Jason put an end to that, and to Jolie. But it was a close thing.

... Ami was fascinated but frustrated as hell. "What caused them to become enemies and why did Jolie leave and April stay?"

... "Oh, you are persistant, aren't you?"

...
